Hut Meet Report – Lakes

We have just spent a lovely weekend in Seathwaite at the High Moss hut in the Duddon valley. The hut was clean and spacious and we shared with two other groups, one the Romsey Mountaineering Club and another group of four out biking, walking and climbing. The hut is owned by the Rucksack club, spacious and with good facilities.

We arrived on Friday evening and then on Saturday Isabel, Phil and I set off to conquer Harter Fell. I’ve only climbed one Wainwright before so was delighted to be trying a second. It was glorious. We were so lucky with the weather, only being caught in a couple of light showers. Isabel was very sprightly in leading the way, followed by Phil with me taking a steady pace behind, but we made it to the top. The Fickle Steps almost had us beaten, being awash and on the way back we crossed the River Duddon only to find we were wading through a bog. We called in at the Newfield Inn in Seathwaite where Phil and Isabel had light bites which were a very good portion and ‘very good indeed.’ I must say the gingerbread and ice-cream looked extremely appealing.

We made it back to the hut to find Mike had had a less successful day with the loss of a footpath and someone stealing his three lemon cheesecakes which we all agreed was not on. Phil lit the fire and we warmed up and got out of damp kit before an early night. On Sunday we headed home, stopping at Cartmel so that Phil could visit the Ducati Owners Club Northern Rally and then Grange-Over-Sands for long enough to walk the promenade. Mike left before us to see bittern.

The next hut meet is on 5th December at Glan Dena. Everyone hopes to see you there.
